Athens welcomed the first Delta Airlines flight on the 8th of March, opening the season earlier than ever before
Athens International Airport, welcomed the first Delta Airlines flight for the season from US, on the 8th of March 2022, starting the season earlier than ever before.
Traditionally, US airlines are operating only during the Summer season, however and due to the attractiveness of Athens to the US market and the very strong Summer 2021 performance, Delta returned much earlier this year.
The US Ambassador to Greece, Mr Geoffrey Pyatt, the Minister of Tourism, Mr Vassilis Kikilias, as well as senior management from Athens International Airport, welcomed the first flight and offered local delicacies to very happy arriving passengers.
Welcoming its arrival, US Ambassador, said that this year will see the highest ever number of flights between Greece and America and that this is just the beginning. Minister of Tourism stated that this early start, is a vote of confidence.
Delta will connect Athens to New York JFK with 11 weekly flights, Atlanta with 7 weekly and will introduce Boston, Athens newest US destination with 3 weekly flights. Atlanta services will commence on the 5th of May and Boston inaugural service, on the 27th of May.
Back in 2019 (March to October), Athens record year at that time, Delta offered over 185 thousands round-trip seats, with Delta increasing the available capacity in the Athens market by +70% (vs.19), offering a total of 315 thousand round trip seats in 2022 (March to October).
Emirates is the only airline, operating year-round, from Athens to the US, offering 7 weekly services. On top of Delta and Emirates, American Airlines and United Airlines will return to Athens this Summer offering 80% and 150% growth respectively (vs.19), in available capacity.
For Summer 2022, Athens will be connected to 6 US cities, to 7 airports by 4 airlines, offering in total 9 daily direct flights to the US.
