Atlas Air Contemplates Major Order for A350F or 777-8F Freighters Amid Expansion Plans
Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, a leading cargo airline based at New York JFK and operating an all Boeing fleet, is in the advanced stages of negotiation with Airbus and Boeing for a significant order, potentially opting for the next-generation A350Fs or 777-8Fs. CEO Michael Steen disclosed to Bloomberg that the decision hinges on clearer delivery timelines, noting that the 777-8F’s delivery could extend to 2027 due to potential delays, while the A350F is anticipated to be operational by early 2026.
This strategic move underscores Atlas Air’s ambition for substantial growth in both fleet size and profitability in the coming years. Steen highlighted the increasing demand for new widebody freighters, pointing out that approximately 20% of the global fleet of 650 widebody freighters is nearing retirement. With Atlas Air currently holding more than 10% of this capacity, the company is poised to expand its presence in the air freight market significantly.
Atlas Air’s current fleet comprises a diverse range of aircraft, including Boeing 737-800(BCF)s, 747-400(F)s, 747-400s, 747-8Fs, 767-300ERs, 767-300Fs, and 777-200Fs. Additionally, its sister carrier Polar Air Cargo operates several 747-8Fs, a 767-300ER(BDSF), and 777-200Fs. This proposed order reflects Atlas Air’s commitment to maintaining a leading edge in the competitive air cargo sector by modernizing its fleet with more efficient and capable freighters.
