Australian Man Arrested for Radio Interference at Melbourne Tullamarine Airport
An Australian man has been arrested and charged with radio interference at Melbourne Tullamarine International Airport after allegedly transmitting false mayday messages and unauthorized communications to commercial aircraft. The 45-year-old was apprehended by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) following a search of his home in the Lower Plenty suburb of Melbourne, where officers discovered four handheld radios and related equipment used for the illegal transmissions.
The police also found two mobile phones containing recordings of the false mayday messages and chants. According to the AFP, the man is suspected of interfering with aviation radio networks at the airport since August, though the Australian Communications Media Authority (ACMA) only reported the issue to police in September.
Detective Superintendent Simone Butcher of the AFP emphasized the gravity of the offenses, stating that aviation security is critical, and any compromise to the safety of passengers through unauthorized access or false transmissions will be prosecuted.
The man has been charged with multiple offenses, including radio transmission that jeopardized the safe operation of an aircraft, operating a radio device without a license, and using a transmitter that interfered with communications, all of which carry significant prison sentences. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison for the most serious charge.
