Australia's Rex will expand in a measured way with two additional Boeing 737s

Australia’s Regional Express (Rex Airlines) is set to expand its fleet with two Boeing 737-800 NextGeneration (NG) aircraft on lease. The new planes will be delivered separately, with one arriving by the end of July 2023 and the other expected by mid-September 2023. The first 737-800 is scheduled to start service in mid-August 2023.

Rex’s plans include launching daily flights between Hobart International Airport (HBA) in Tasmania and Melbourne Airport (MEL) starting from August 17, 2023. This move comes seven weeks after the airline began operating flights between Sydney Airport (SYD) and Adelaide Airport (ADL).

John Sharp, the deputy chairman of Rex Airlines, expressed excitement about the arrival of the new aircraft and revealed that two more 737-800NG planes are expected to join their fleet by the end of 2023. He emphasized the carrier’s measured approach to growth, ensuring that capacity meets demand, while remaining flexible due to the dynamic nature of the aviation industry.

Currently, Rex serves major cities such as Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Canberra, as well as the Gold Coast. Sharp extended an invitation to other cities interested in experiencing Rex’s trademark reliability, country hospitality, and affordable fares.

Rex Airline boasts a fleet of 58 Saab 340 turboprops and seven Boeing 737-800NG jets, covering 57 destinations across Australia. Moreover, the airline recently expressed its ambition to transport Australian researchers to the Antarctic, further showcasing its commitment to serving the nation’s needs.
