Avelo Airlines Launches First International Route from BDL

Avelo Airlines has launched its first international route as part of its growing expansion from Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Hartford, Connecticut. The new service connects BDL with Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Jamaica, operating twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays using the airline’s Boeing 737 fleet.

The route aims to target both leisure travelers and the visiting friends and relatives (VFR) market, with Connecticut having the fifth-largest Jamaican ancestry population in the U.S. According to census data, more than 56,000 state residents have Jamaican roots. Avelo CEO Andrew Levy highlighted the importance of this connection, stating, “With a large Jamaican community residing in Connecticut, we are looking forward to making it easier for them to connect with family and friends.”

Shane Munroe, CEO of MBJ Airports, expressed confidence in the service’s impact, noting it will boost tourism to Jamaica and open opportunities for cultural exchange and business between the two regions.

The launch follows Avelo’s establishment of a two-aircraft base at BDL on Nov. 7, marking the airline’s entry into five domestic markets: Concord and Wilmington (North Carolina), Daytona Beach and Lakeland (Florida), and Houston Hobby. All routes will be flown twice a week. Avelo’s second international route, to Cancun, Mexico, is set to begin on Nov. 20.

Avelo’s new base at BDL ramps up competition with rival Breeze Airways, which is currently the fifth-largest carrier at BDL. Breeze will expand its operations from nearby Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) with 10 new nonstop routes starting Dec. 10, including popular Florida destinations and more. This growth directly competes with Avelo, which has operated from HVN since its launch.

In addition to Avelo’s expansion, BermudAir has confirmed a new route from Bermuda to BDL, beginning April 3, 2025. The airline will also launch services to Raleigh-Durham and Charleston in mid-April, further enhancing the region’s connectivity.
