AviAlliance to Acquire AGS Airports in £1.53 Billion Deal
AviAlliance, the airport management company, has reached an agreement to acquire AGS Airports, which operates Aberdeen, Glasgow, and Southampton airports, in a deal valued at over £1.53 billion ($2 billion). The purchase price is £900 million, with AviAlliance also taking on £653 million in debt.
AGS Airports was established through a joint venture between Spanish infrastructure group Ferrovial and Macquarie following their acquisition of the airport portfolio from Heathrow Airport Holdings in 2014. The transaction marks the latest step in AviAlliance’s global expansion, adding AGS to its existing network of airports, including those in Athens, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, and San Juan.
Gerhard Schroeder, Managing Director of AviAlliance, expressed the company’s commitment to the long-term development of the airports. “Aberdeen, Glasgow, and Southampton airports provide vital connectivity for communities in Scotland and the southeast of England,” Schroeder said. “We are committed to supporting the airports to expand their route networks, enhance the passenger experience, and implement their sustainability strategies.”
Over the course of its ownership, Ferrovial and Macquarie invested £250 million into the airports, including significant upgrades at each location. These investments include a £20 million expansion of Aberdeen International Airport’s terminal, £9 million in improvements to Glasgow Airport’s infrastructure, and a £17 million runway extension at Southampton Airport.
Martin Bradley, Regional Head of Infrastructure for Macquarie Asset Management, noted, “Following this decade of investment, we are pleased to pass the baton to AviAlliance to unlock the next phase of growth.”
The deal is expected to close by the first quarter of 2025, pending regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
