Bahrain International Airport (BAH) is undergoing significant transformations to align with Bahrain’s Vision 2030 economic program, aiming to enhance its role as a global connector. The highlight of these developments is the newly inaugurated $1.1 billion terminal, opened in July 2022 after over six years of construction. This state-of-the-art terminal, covering 210,000 m², is designed to handle up to 14 million passengers annually.

Zayed Bin Rashid Al Zayani, Bahrain’s Minister of Industry, Commerce & Tourism and Chairman of Gulf Air Group, emphasizes the airport’s role in fueling the national carrier’s growth and its efforts to attract new airlines. This is part of a broader strategy to boost tourism, with the goal of doubling inbound tourist spending to approximately $5.3 billion by 2026.

Air connectivity, particularly crucial for an island nation like Bahrain, is a key focus. The new terminal at BAH has garnered international recognition, including accolades such as the World’s Best New Airport at the 2022 Skytrax World Airport Awards, the World’s Best Airport for Baggage Delivery, and the Best Airport Staff in the Middle East in 2023. Additionally, it has received a 5-star airport rating from Skytrax for two consecutive years.

BAH’s commitment to sustainability has also been acknowledged by ACI Asia-Pacific, particularly for its efforts to combat single-use plastics.

In preparation for hosting the 29th Routes World event in October 2024, Al Zayani highlights the opportunity to showcase Bahrain’s rich cultural heritage and history, spanning over 5,000 years. This event, gathering the global route development community, is seen as a strategic platform to present Bahrain’s revamped aviation ecosystem, including the new airport terminal and the rebranding of Gulf Air.

Al Zayani expresses enthusiasm about hosting the event, emphasizing the goal of making it a memorable and successful showcase of Bahrain’s advancements in the aviation sector. The Routes World 2024 event, set to take place from October 6 to 8, will be held at Exhibition World Bahrain, marking a significant milestone in Bahrain International Airport’s journey towards becoming a key player in global air travel and connectivity.
