Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at Baltimore’s BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport thwarted an alarming security breach when they discovered a loaded handgun in the possession of an airport employee on Tuesday, May 28.

According to TSA reports, the employee, employed at a retail shop within the airport, was found carrying a loaded 9mm handgun along with eight rounds of ammunition during routine security screening at the checkpoint prior to commencing work.

Upon detection of the firearm, airport police were promptly alerted and swiftly responded to the scene, confiscating the weapon and initiating appropriate legal action.

The employee in question now faces serious firearms charges and has had their airport identification badge revoked as a consequence of the incident. Additionally, they may incur a substantial federal financial civil citation, potentially amounting to thousands of dollars, as outlined by TSA regulations.

This troubling occurrence marks the 21st firearm intercepted by TSA officers at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport thus far this year, underscoring the ongoing importance of stringent security measures in place to safeguard passengers and airport personnel alike. Notably, last year saw a total of 42 firearms intercepted at the same airport, highlighting the persistent need for vigilance and compliance with TSA guidelines to ensure the safety and integrity of air travel.
