Boeing CEO Urges Focus Amid Challenges and Airbus Rivalry
Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg has called on employees to prioritize collaboration and problem-solving over internal disputes as the company grapples with significant challenges. Speaking at a recent all-hands town hall meeting, Ortberg expressed frustration with the company’s internal dynamics, urging staff to shift their focus toward defeating rival Airbus.
“We spend more time arguing amongst ourselves than strategizing how to beat Airbus,” Ortberg said, according to The Wall Street Journal. He emphasized the need for employees to “focus on the task at hand” and avoid negativity, such as “sitting at the water cooler and complaining about others.”
Ortberg, who assumed leadership of Boeing in August 2024, has faced a turbulent start to his tenure, including a seven-week workers’ strike, multibillion-dollar losses, and ongoing layoffs. The company recently announced plans to reduce its global workforce by 10%, impacting over 2,200 employees in Washington state and 400 union workers.
Boeing is also navigating external pressures, including the potential impact of proposed tariffs by President-elect Donald Trump. Ortberg highlighted concerns about a trade war with China affecting aircraft exports to Chinese airlines.
Despite the challenges, Boeing has made progress. The company resumed production of its 737 MAX aircraft and secured an order for 80 planes from Avia Solutions Group. Ortberg remains optimistic about Boeing’s future, stating in the company’s third-quarter report that with the right focus and culture, Boeing can regain its iconic status in the aerospace industry.
