Boeing has officially delivered the first CH-47F Block II Chinook to the U.S. Army, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of up to 465 Chinooks in the Army’s fleet. The advanced Block II configuration enhances the helicopter’s capabilities, allowing it to lift more weight, fly further, and require less maintenance.

Heather McBryan, Vice President and Program Manager for Boeing’s Cargo Programs, emphasized the strategic advantages of the upgraded CH-47F Block II. “This modernization program enables the battle-tested Chinook to play a key role in multi-domain operations going forward,” said McBryan. The CH-47F Block II features an improved drivetrain, a reinforced airframe, and an enhanced fuel system, which collectively increase the helicopter’s max gross weight by an additional 4,000 pounds and extend its mission radius for nearly all payloads.

Viva Kelly, Acting Project Manager for U.S. Army Cargo Helicopters, highlighted the aircraft’s vital role in future operations. “As the Army’s Heavy Lift platform of tomorrow, the CH-47F Block II provides increased capability while continuing support of the Army’s requirement to remain strategically responsive across the full spectrum of operations,” Kelly stated.

The Block II program also focuses on improving aircraft sustainment. Enhancements such as a new rotor system boost reliability and minimize unscheduled maintenance, while a simplified fuel system improves overall sustainment efficiency, reducing both maintenance burdens and costs.
