Boeing has formally proposed its CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopter to Poland, aiming to meet the nation’s growing heavy transport needs. The announcement was made at the annual MSPO International Defence Industry Exhibition, held from September 3 to 6, 2024, which also marked the 25th anniversary of Poland’s NATO membership.

“The Chinook has been a key part of European defense and humanitarian missions for more than five decades and would enhance Poland’s cooperation with allied forces while supporting the country’s defense needs,” said Tim Flood, Senior Director of International Business Development for Europe and the Americas at Boeing, in a press release on September 5, 2024. He also emphasized that the Chinook could boost Poland’s defense sector by creating jobs, driving economic growth, and offering greater autonomy.

The CH-47 Chinook is a versatile tandem rotor helicopter designed for various missions, including cargo and troop transport, search and rescue operations, and special military missions. Known for its ability to operate in harsh environments, such as mountainous and unprepared areas, the Chinook can fly at altitudes of up to 20,000 feet (6.1 kilometers) and perform pinnacle landings, making it highly suitable for rugged terrains.

Adam Hodges, Business Development lead for Vertical Lift Programs at Boeing, highlighted the strategic advantages the Chinook offers Poland. “Operating the Chinook in tandem with the newly acquired Apaches will serve as a force multiplier for the Polish Armed Forces due to their complementary capabilities,” said Hodges.

The latest version of the helicopter, the CH-47F Block II, features advanced technology and increased payload capabilities. This model can carry up to 31 combat troops or transport artillery and equipment weighing up to 16,000 pounds (7,257 kilograms). The Chinook’s enhanced capabilities make it an invaluable asset for military and humanitarian operations, especially in Europe, where such heavy-lift helicopters are frequently used for both defense and disaster relief efforts.

Boeing has already made significant advancements with the CH-47F Block II. On July 1, 2024, the company delivered the first of these helicopters to the U.S. Army, which plans to use them for additional testing. Full-rate production is expected to begin between July and September 2025, further solidifying the Chinook’s position as a cutting-edge solution for heavy-lift missions.

Poland’s consideration of the CH-47 Chinook comes at a time of increased focus on enhancing its military capabilities in coordination with NATO allies. The Chinook’s proven track record in Europe and its versatility make it an appealing option for the Polish Armed Forces as they seek to modernize and expand their fleet. In addition to its military applications, the helicopter’s ability to provide humanitarian relief and disaster response adds to its value.

By incorporating the Chinook into its fleet, Poland could strengthen its defense collaboration with NATO while also bolstering its own defense industry. Boeing’s proposal highlights the company’s commitment to supporting Poland’s defense modernization efforts and the broader European security landscape.
