Boeing has released a new Spotlight report highlighting its sustainability efforts and achievements in promoting sustainable aviation in the UK and Ireland during 2022. This report is part of Boeing’s annual sustainability reporting and aligns with the company’s global 2030 sustainability goals, which encompass reducing emissions, waste, water use, and energy consumption by 25%, as well as investing in communities and people.

Some of the key initiatives and accomplishments outlined in the report include:

  • Cascade Climate Impact Model: Boeing launched this tool to analyze the environmental and economic impacts of various emission reduction strategies for aviation, such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), hydrogen, electrification, and operational efficiency.
  • Transatlantic SAF Flight: Boeing secured £15 million in government funding for the first 100% SAF-powered transatlantic flight, conducted in collaboration with Virgin Atlantic and LanzaJet. The flight used a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner powered by SAF derived from waste-based ethanol.
  • Founding Membership in Energy Innovation Centre: Boeing became a founding member of the University of Sheffield’s Energy Innovation Centre, a £22 million research facility focused on developing low-carbon technologies for aviation and other sectors. Boeing’s involvement includes supporting projects related to hydrogen propulsion, hybrid-electric systems, and battery storage.

The report also highlights Boeing’s contributions to the social and economic development of the UK and Ireland, including support for STEM education, job creation, skills enhancement, innovation, and collaboration with local suppliers.

Boeing’s commitment to working with various stakeholders, including customers, regulators, suppliers, and the community, underscores its dedication to achieving a more sustainable future for aviation. The company expressed pride in its progress in 2022 and its anticipation of building upon these achievements in the coming years.
