Entry & Exit Requirements

The following information is for citizens of the United States. If you are a citizen of a country other than the United States, contact an embassy or consulate for up-to-date requirements. For additional questions regarding entry/exit requirements, contact Global Rescue at +1 (617) 459-4200.

Brazil does not require American citizens to secure visas if they are traveling to the country for tourism, business, transit, artistic, or sport activities with no intention of establishing residence. A passport is required for entry. Passports must be valid on the date of entry, and one blank page is required for an entry stamp. An immigration entry form is handed out upon arrival and must be presented upon exiting the country. An onward/return ticket and proof of sufficient funds are required. Travelers must declare any amount greater than BRL 10,000 (USD 1,900) upon entering and exiting Brazil.

A special requirement exists for dual nationals. US citizens who are also of Brazilian nationality cannot be issued Brazilian visas and must obtain a Brazilian passport from the nearest Brazilian embassy or consulate in order to enter or exit the country.

Import Restrictions

The following items are prohibited:

  • Illegal drugs;
  • Guns, explosives, and ammunition;
  • Knives and deadly weapons;
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables;
  • Plants and plant products;
  • Birds;
  • Dairy products, including milk, eggs, and cheese;
  • Fish and fish products;
  • Counterfeit money and goods;
  • Hazardous materials; AND
  • Pornographic materials.

The following items are permitted:

  • 400 cigarettes,
  • 25 cigars,
  • 250 grams of tobacco,
  • 24 units of alcoholic beverages,
  • 10 units of makeup,
  • books and periodicals, AND
  • local and foreign currency above BRL 10,000 must be declared.

The following restrictions apply:

  • Flowers, plants, meat, dairy, OR fish products require permission from the Ministry of Agriculture.
  • Pets must have an international health certificate, which must be issued below 10 days prior to their arrival in the country, as well as a rabies vaccination.
