Brazil’s LATAM and GOL in Talks with Embraer for E2 Jet Order
LATAM Airlines Brasil (JJ) and GOL Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes (G3) are reportedly in discussions with Embraer regarding a potential order for E2 jets. This news comes from Francisco Gomes Neto, Embraer’s Chief Executive Officer.
These talks follow a statement made by Brazil’s President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in April, where he expressed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that both GOL and LATAM Brasil acquire jets manufactured by Embraer. The planemaker aims to nearly double its annual revenue to $10 billion by 2030.
“We will forge a well-balanced society so that Embraer works, Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras works, GOL buys Embraer planes, LATAM buys Embraer planes, [and] the Government buys the planes it needs,” Lula was quoted by Reuters.
LATAM Airlines Brasil declined to comment on Gomes Neto’s statements. However, Roberto Alvo, Chief Executive Officer at LATAM Airlines Group, recently told ch-aviation that it is unlikely the airline will return to its previous level of operational complexity with multiple aircraft types.
GOL has not provided a comment yet. The airline is currently undergoing US Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings and has outlined its fleet expansion plans. By 2029, GOL aims to increase its fleet to 169 aircraft, all of which will be Boeing 737s, up from an estimated 142 aircraft by the end of this year.
ABrazil has 146 Embraer-produced aircraft, operated by 24 carriers, either active or inactive. Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras and the Brazilian Air Force (Força Aérea Brasileira) are Embraer’s largest clients. Additionally, there are 59 Embraer aircraft on order, with Azul expecting fifty E195-E2s and the Brazilian Air Force anticipating nine KC-390s.
