U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell celebrated the completion of two airport projects in Denver and New Orleans on Tuesday, highlighting the economic and safety benefits of investing in infrastructure.

In Denver, Buttigieg joined Colorado Governor Jared Polis, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, and Denver International Airport CEO Phil Washington to cut the ribbon on a new $51 million taxiway that was funded entirely by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The new taxiway, called Taxiway EE, eliminates a “hot spot” where there was a higher risk of airplane collisions or incursions by providing unimpeded access to and from Runway 17L-35R. The project also increases the capacity and efficiency of the airport, which had its busiest-ever month in June and expects to handle up to 80 million passengers this year.

Buttigieg said that the new taxiway was part of the FAA’s largest safety project in the country and that it would improve the flow of air traffic at one of the nation’s busiest airports. He also announced that the airport would receive a $30.6 million grant from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for runway rehabilitation and lighting system upgrades, which are expected to be completed next month.
