Celebrity Cruises is working towards its parent company’s net zero emissions goal for 2050 and highlighted several sustainability advancements it can celebrate this Earth Day.

The Celebrity Beyond, the line’s newest ship, reduces fuel consumption by 20 percent with its parabolic ultra-bow design; an emissions purification system that removes about 98 percent of sulfur dioxide and 97 percent of nitrogen oxide emissions; and shore power systems that reduce in-port emissions to nearly nothing while in-port.

The line’s newest mega yacht for the Galapagos, the Celebrity Flora, offers a 100-guest maximum as a way to reduce over tourism across the islands’ delicate ecosystems. It also has a dynamic positioning system, eliminating the need to drop anchor and potentially harm the seabed. Solar panels also generate supplementary power.

The fifth Edge Series ship, which is currently unnamed, will also feature several sustainability improvements. These include a flex fuel engine that offers the flexibility to use three different types of fuel, including methanol, which will help reduce overall emissions produced.

Additionally, the cruise line has banned plastic straws since 2019 and bans most single-use plastics, including water bottles; and is partnered with the World Wildlife Fund to advance the protection of critical ocean ecosystems.
