Chinese-Made A321 to Be Delivered to Wizz Air, a First for Europe
Airbus is set to make history by delivering a jetliner manufactured in China to a European customer for the first time. The A321neo jet, constructed for Wizz Air Holdings Plc, recently completed its maiden test flight on June 9. This move showcases Airbus’ global production capabilities as it tackles challenges in delivering new aircraft to its customers.
The decision to produce the A321neo in Tianjin, China, was driven by Airbus’ ability to provide a production slot that aligns with Wizz Air’s growth plans and expectations. While the majority of planes manufactured in Tianjin have been allocated to Chinese airlines to support the country’s thriving aviation industry, the plant has occasionally produced aircraft for other carriers such as Malaysia’s Air Asia.
Wizz Air confirmed its role as the recipient of the Tianjin-built A321neo but refrained from providing further details or comments on the matter.
In a bid to strengthen its foothold in China, the United States, and Europe, Airbus announced its plan in April to double production in Tianjin by introducing a second assembly line. CEO Guillaume Faury emphasized the importance of establishing a “strong presence with critical mass” in multiple regions worldwide. By distributing production lines globally, Airbus aims to create surge capacity that enables swift recovery in the face of difficulties at any given factory.
