Collaborative Support by AHLA and HHA for West Maui Amid Hurricane Dora’s Wildfires

The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) and the Hawai‘i Hotel Alliance (HHA) have united their efforts to provide crucial support to West Maui following the devastating wildfires triggered by Hurricane Dora.

Amid this challenging period, Jerry Gibson, President of the Hawai‘i Hotel Alliance, stressed the significance of maintaining open communication with Lahaina and other regions in West Maui. Given the dependence of most hotels on diesel generators, refueling operations have emerged as a critical task. However, the limited access to the affected areas poses a unique challenge, compelling hotel establishments to prioritize the safety and well-being of their employees, guests, and the wider West Maui community.

In an endeavor to coordinate a comprehensive response, AHLA and HHA have initiated communication channels with key authorities, including the Governor’s Office, the Lieutenant Governor’s Office, and relevant state and county officials.

Chip Rogers, President & CEO of the American Hotel & Lodging Association, acknowledged their vigilant monitoring of the situation throughout Hawai‘i and the continuous engagement with the hotel community. Considering the state’s advisory to avoid nonessential travel to Maui, guests with imminent travel plans are encouraged to consider rescheduling for a later date.

Through a concerted collaboration, members of AHLA and HHA are diligently working to secure lodging on O‘ahu for Maui residents displaced by the incident and visitors evacuating the island. This partnership is facilitated in conjunction with the State of Hawai‘i Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism.

The relief efforts entail harnessing hotel resources such as ballrooms, equipment, and staff to bolster the recovery process. Additionally, hotels are actively engaged in facilitating the safe and efficient repatriation of Maui guests traveling on nonessential trips.

Kekoa McClellan, representing AHLA, HHA, and influential Maui hotel proprietors, emphasized the industry’s unwavering commitment to rallying together and supporting Maui Nui and the local community during this crisis.
