Cruise Lines Ease Cancellations Amid L.A. Wildfires

As devastating wildfires continue to sweep through the Los Angeles region, major cruise lines are easing their cancellation policies to provide greater flexibility and support for affected travelers. Both Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) and Princess Cruises have announced fee-free cancellation measures for passengers impacted by the fires, which have destroyed thousands of homes and businesses and claimed at least 24 lives, significantly disrupting local lives and travel plans.

Norwegian Cruise Line has taken immediate steps to help guests who call the Los Angeles area home. Even though the company currently has no ships sailing from the region, it recognizes the impact that the wildfires are having on its customers. In a heartfelt statement on its website, Norwegian expressed, “Our hearts and thoughts are with all of those impacted by the wildfires affecting the greater Los Angeles region.” To further support affected passengers, Norwegian Cruise Line has waived cancellation fees for all voyages scheduled to depart in January and February 2025. In addition, the cruise line is offering 100 percent future cruise credits, allowing guests to rebook their cruises at a later date without forfeiting any of their paid fares. As an extra measure of support, Norwegian has pledged $50,000 to the American Red Cross to help fund disaster relief efforts, reaffirming its commitment to the community during these challenging times.

Princess Cruises, headquartered in California, is also stepping in to help travelers impacted by the fires. Recognizing the hardships faced by many in the community—including those residing in evacuation zones or whose homes have suffered significant damage—Princess has implemented a fee-free cancellation policy for passengers scheduled to depart from the Port of Los Angeles. The policy applies to cruises departing between January 11 and January 30, 2025. In its statement to USA Today, Princess Cruises emphasized that even though the Los Angeles World Cruise Center and Los Angeles International Airport continue to operate normally, the company is sensitive to the difficulties many of its guests face during this crisis.

In a further effort to ease financial burdens, Princess Cruises is providing future cruise credits equal to the full amount of passengers’ paid fares. These credits can be applied to any sailing departing from Los Angeles later in the year. Additionally, the cruise line is refunding pre-purchased additional items, such as shore excursions, ensuring that passengers are not left with non-refundable expenses during such an unpredictable period.

While firefighters have made some progress combating the wildfires over the past weekend, high winds expected to return on Monday could complicate containment efforts further, potentially extending the duration and severity of the crisis. In this uncertain environment, the responsive measures by both Norwegian Cruise Line and Princess Cruises underscore the industry’s understanding that natural disasters can have a profound impact on travel plans. By offering lenient cancellation policies and generous future cruise credits, these carriers are aiming to alleviate some of the stress and financial uncertainty faced by affected guests.
