Delta Adds Second Solar Eclipse Flight on April 8
Delta Air Lines has announced the addition of a second special flight on April 8 to provide passengers with the opportunity to witness the total solar eclipse, as the path of totality crosses 13 U.S. states. This move follows in the footsteps of Southwest, which introduced similar flights last year.
For travelers who missed the chance to book seats on Delta’s initial flight from Austin to Detroit, the airline has opened up another route to accommodate the high demand. The eclipse, a rare celestial event, won’t be visible again from the contiguous U.S. until 2044, making this an exceptional opportunity for enthusiasts.
The eclipse, occurring when the moon passes between the earth and the sun, will traverse North and Central America, creating a path of totality that extends across multiple states. With excitement mounting, Delta’s lead meteorologist Warren Weston notes that this eclipse will last significantly longer than the one in 2017 and cover a wider path.
Delta’s initial flight sold out within 24 hours of its announcement, prompting the addition of a new route between Dallas and Detroit. This flight aims to maximize passengers’ time within the path of totality.
In addition to the scheduled special flights, Delta has identified several regular flights that may offer glimpses of the eclipse’s path. These include flights such as DL 5699 (DTW-HPN), DL 924 (LAX-DFW), DL 2869 (LAX-SAT), DL 1001 (SLC-SAT), and DL 1683 (SLC-AUS).
Southwest Airlines previously announced similar flights aligned with the eclipse’s path, spanning popular destinations such as Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, New York, Ohio, and Texas. Southwest has even partnered with Omni Hotels for a “Solarbration” sweepstakes to mark the occasion.
For those unable to secure seats on these special flights, there are ample opportunities to witness the eclipse from the ground. NASA provides comprehensive information on its website, including the timing and locations for optimal viewing, safety precautions, and resources for acquiring appropriate eyewear.
Amidst ongoing challenges in the airline industry, including fuel costs, labor disputes, and recent incidents, the anticipation surrounding the solar eclipse offers a moment of positivity. As travelers eagerly await this celestial spectacle, the skies promise to deliver a breathtaking show on April 8.
