Delta Suspends Hot Meal Service Due to Food Safety Issue

Delta Air Lines has temporarily suspended hot meal service on over 200 flights from its Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) hub due to a reported “food safety issue.” The airline informed its catering partner of the problem during a recent inspection, leading to a halt in operations at the facility.

In a statement released on Sunday, Delta confirmed that all hot food production at the Detroit hub was immediately shut down and that onboard provisioning will be managed from alternative kitchens. “Delta and its catering partner immediately shut down hot food production and subsequently suspended all activity from the facility,” the airline stated. Passengers affected by the disruption were offered travel vouchers or frequent flyer miles as compensation for the inconvenience.

A message sent to flight crews on Friday indicated that first-class meals could not be loaded due to “an unforeseen supply chain issue,” and flights would be stocked with additional snacks instead. Delta emphasized that no illnesses had been reported among customers or employees as a result of the food safety issue.

The airline industry relies heavily on third-party catering kitchens to serve thousands of meals daily. Do & Co, Delta’s catering partner, has not commented on the situation as of yet. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also did not respond to requests for comment on the matter.

This incident follows a similar occurrence in July when a Detroit-to-Amsterdam Delta flight had to divert to New York due to reports of spoiled chicken, prompting the airline to limit meal options to pasta on several flights in the days that followed.

Delta is committed to ensuring the safety and satisfaction of its customers, and the airline’s swift action in managing the food safety issue reflects its dedication to maintaining high standards for onboard services. As operations resume, Delta will continue to monitor the situation and ensure that customers receive the quality dining experience they expect while traveling.

For travelers flying from Detroit, Delta advises checking for updates on meal services and available options as the situation develops. The airline remains focused on providing alternative meal solutions while addressing the concerns raised by the recent inspection and maintaining its commitment to customer safety and satisfaction.
