DMOs Face Challenges in Digital Marketing Evolution

Destination marketing organizations (DMOs) are currently grappling with significant challenges in the evolving digital landscape, as highlighted in the “State of Destination Marketing 2025” report by travel marketing specialist Sojern. This comprehensive study underscores the complexities DMOs face, from managing multichannel campaigns to satisfying diverse stakeholder demands, all while operating under tight budgets and escalating expectations.

According to the report, despite these challenges, 85% of DMOs are maintaining or increasing their digital advertising budgets annually. Programmatic advertising has become a favored tool among 83% of these organizations due to its measurable nature. However, the swift pace of digital marketing advancements continues to pose hurdles, particularly in adapting to new technologies and strategies.

Social media marketing remains predominant, utilized by 91% of DMOs and ranking as a top channel for nearly all respondents. Yet, the report points out a critical disconnect between current metrics, such as content engagement and clicks, and more substantial organizational goals like boosting bookings. This misalignment often leads to difficulties in justifying marketing efforts and proving their effectiveness in driving real-world results.

Sojern advocates for a closer alignment of digital key performance indicators (KPIs) with DMOs’ broader objectives to bridge this gap. It also suggests leveraging emerging technologies such as location data for enhanced performance measurement and targeting. Furthermore, while many DMOs are incorporating artificial intelligence for content creation, significant opportunities exist in expanding AI utilization for data analysis.

The findings from this study, which involved 200 participants from global DMOs and was supported by major entities like Destination Canada and Brand USA, highlight the urgent need for DMOs to adapt their strategies to thrive in the digital era.
