Educational Travel Trends Rise Over Relaxation

Travel preferences are shifting as more Americans seek meaningful, learning-focused experiences instead of traditional relaxation-based vacations, according to a recent survey conducted by National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions among 2,000 respondents.

The findings highlight a clear move toward purpose-driven travel, with a growing number of travelers prioritizing experiences that offer personal growth, education, and discovery. Rather than simply unwinding, many travelers now want trips that challenge perspectives, expand knowledge, and push them beyond their comfort zones.

According to the survey, 85% of Americans prefer destinations that provide a sense of challenge and transformation. This signals a strong appetite for immersive travel experiences that go beyond passive sightseeing. Travelers are increasingly looking for opportunities to engage with local cultures, environments, and ideas in ways that leave a lasting impact.

Additionally, 82% of respondents indicated that future travel choices will be influenced by whether a destination offers a purpose beyond relaxation. This trend suggests that discovery-led travel is quickly becoming a mainstream expectation rather than a niche interest. Travelers are no longer satisfied with simply “getting away,” but are more focused on what they gain from the journey.

The data further reinforces this shift, with 70% of participants stating that travel is now more about what they take away from the experience than the act of escaping daily routines. Meanwhile, 62% said trips centered on learning and discovery are just as appealing, if not more so, than traditional leisure vacations. Another 57% noted that their curiosity has increased over time, reflecting a broader trend toward lifelong learning through travel.

This evolving mindset is also reflected in initiatives such as the Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship, a program developed by Lindblad Expeditions in collaboration with the National Geographic Society. The initiative brings educators on expedition voyages, enabling them to translate real-world, field-based experiences into classroom learning and inspire future generations.

The concept of travel as an educational tool is not new for the company. It traces back more than six decades to Lars-Eric Lindblad, who introduced non-scientific travelers to Antarctica, opening remote regions to experiential exploration. Today, that legacy continues to shape the brand’s focus on combining exploration with education in some of the world’s most unique and remote destinations.

As traveler expectations continue to evolve, the demand for enriching, knowledge-driven journeys is set to redefine the future of global tourism.
