Embraer E190F E-Freighter Secures FAA Certification

On October 10, 2024, Embraer announced that its E190F E-Freighter, the Passenger-to-Freight (P2F) conversion of the popular E190 airliner, has been certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This certification follows similar approval from Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) in July 2024, with certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) expected by the end of the year.

Along with the E190F certification, the FAA also approved a cargo loading system (CLS) developed by U.S. Cargo Systems, based in North Carolina, for use on the aircraft.

The E190F P2F program, launched by Embraer in 2022, aims to meet the growing demand for cargo aircraft in this category. It offers a modern solution for airlines replacing their older E190 fleets with the more fuel-efficient E2 version, allowing these airframes to be repurposed for freight.

Embraer is positioning the E190F as a more efficient replacement for smaller turboprop cargo aircraft. With a payload capacity of 13.5 tons and a 40% increase in volume capacity compared to the largest turboprops, the E190F offers faster speeds and longer range. Additionally, the manufacturer claims the E190F achieves a 30% reduction in operational costs compared to larger narrow-body jets.

This isn’t the first P2F conversion for the E190, as Brazilian airline Azul converted older E190s into cargo aircraft in 2021 to meet the surge in e-commerce demand, branding them as ‘Class F freighters’. However, the E190F marks Embraer’s first in-house P2F program, solidifying its position in the growing cargo aircraft market.
