Emirates SkyCargo has become the first airline to join the Move to -15°C global coalition, marking a major step in redefining temperature standards in the frozen food supply chain. The initiative, launched at COP28 in the UAE, aims to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact by lowering the industry-standard frozen food temperature by 3°C, without compromising food quality or safety.

The coalition, established in 2023, is supported by global logistics leader DP World and academic institutions like the International Institute of Refrigeration, the University of Birmingham, and London South Bank University. Its mission is to explore practical implementation of this temperature adjustment through cross-industry collaboration, data sharing, operational revisions, and policy advocacy.

Emirates brings its extensive expertise in perishable goods logistics through its Emirates SkyCargo division. Handling 900 to 1,000 tons of fresh produce daily, Emirates SkyCargo has developed advanced cool chain infrastructure and proprietary innovations that can provide valuable insights for reimagining frozen food logistics. Though frozen goods represent a smaller portion of its cargo, the airline’s involvement promises to advance the coalition’s objectives significantly.

“This coalition is a future-looking concept, and we are excited to offer our insight to shape the next phase of food logistics while driving meaningful environmental impact,” said Dennis Lister, Senior Vice President of Product and Innovation at Emirates SkyCargo.

Mas Eskesen, Chairman of the Move to -15°C Coalition, emphasized the importance of collaboration, noting that Emirates’ participation underscores the airline industry’s critical role in the global cold chain.

Emirates’ involvement aligns with its broader sustainability objectives, including its $200 million Sustainability Fund dedicated to reducing fossil fuel reliance and partnerships with initiatives like the Aviation Impact Accelerator and The Solent Cluster in the UK, focusing on low-carbon fuel production.

By joining the coalition, Emirates reaffirms its commitment to innovation, collaboration, and sustainability, demonstrating that transformative change is achievable through cross-sector efforts.
