Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport (YXY), located in Canada’s Yukon territory, has been granted substantial funding of up to C$186 million ($138 million) by Transport Canada. This funding injection aims to facilitate a series of crucial infrastructure improvements that are vital to sustaining essential services at the airport, including passenger and charter flights, as well as cargo handling operations.

The ambitious project encompasses four major initiatives:

  1. Upgrading the Existing Parallel Runway: Enhancements to the parallel runway will enhance the airport’s operational capabilities and safety standards.
  2. Reconstructing the Main Runway: The reconstruction of the primary runway is a pivotal component of the project, ensuring it remains in optimal condition to accommodate a wide range of aircraft.
  3. Replacing the Whitehorse Air Maintenance Facility: This upgrade will bolster maintenance capabilities and contribute to the overall efficiency of the airport.
  4. Constructing a New Helicopter Operations Area: The new helicopter operations area will serve as a valuable addition to the airport’s infrastructure, further diversifying its services.

Nils Clarke, Yukon’s highways and public works minister, emphasized the critical role of the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport in the region’s transportation network. He stated, “It keeps us connected, allows for critical medical services, supports our tourism and resource sectors, and contributes to Arctic security efforts. By replacing the main runway, we will continue to ensure the airport meets the needs of the territory.”

Currently, Air North, YXY’s largest scheduled carrier, operates flights to six destinations, including Calgary, Dawson City, Edmonton, Inuvik, Old Crow, and Vancouver, providing a total of 3,400 weekly departure seats. Additionally, Air Canada offers daily services from Vancouver International Airport to YXY, further enhancing connectivity in the region.

The bulk of the funding, approximately C$160.6 million, has been allocated to the main runway replacement contract, which has been awarded to the esteemed Flatiron Construction Company. The remaining funds will be dedicated to advancing the planning phases of the other three critical infrastructure projects.

With this substantial investment from Transport Canada, Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport is well-positioned to strengthen its role as a vital hub for transportation, commerce, and connectivity in the Yukon territory and beyond. These infrastructure upgrades will ensure the airport’s continued ability to serve the needs of the community and support regional development.
