On April 16, 2023, a ground handling accident occurred at Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), resulting in damages to two EVA Air planes. The incident involved an Airbus A321-200 being towed and a parked Boeing 777-300ER with registration B-16740, both empty.

Reports suggest that the driver for EVA Air Logistics accidentally entered the apron while turning on the taxiway, causing the wingtip of the A321 to collide with the 777’s fuselage just below the cockpit. The collision caused visible damage to both aircraft, with the A321’s wingtip embedded into the 777’s fuselage near the nose.

It is worth noting that the same A321 aircraft was involved in a tailstrike on balked landing in Guam in August 2021.

EVA Air has informed the relevant authorities of the incident and is investigating the causes and extent of the damage to the two planes. In a statement, the airline mentioned that the employees involved in the accident have been suspended.

The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers involved in ground handling operations and the need for continued vigilance to prevent such accidents from occurring.
