Exploring Potential New Train Connections Between Spain and Portugal
Spain’s national rail operator has recently expanded its routes, connecting major cities in France. Rumors are now swirling about Renfe’s plans to extend its network into Portugal. This Euronews article sheds light on the potential Madrid-Lisbon connection and more.
Various media outlets have reported Renfe’s interest in launching new train services between Spain and Portugal. This includes the much-anticipated link between Madrid and Lisbon, as well as a connection between the northwest Spanish port city of A Coruña and Porto. Notably, these two country capitals have not had a direct train connection since 2020 when Renfe discontinued its overnight train-hotel service.
Portugal’s High-Speed Train Line
Portugal is making strides in developing a high-speed train line, with the initial phase slated for completion in 2024. The 100km line from Elvas to Evora promises to significantly reduce travel time between Lisbon and Badajoz in Spain, aiming for less than two hours. This forms part of a larger Iberian high-speed rail network that will drastically cut travel times, including a potential six-hour connection between Madrid and Lisbon by 2027.
The coastal line could further extend to Vigo, Santiago, and A Coruña in northwest Spain. Additionally, Madrid may become linked to Porto via Salamanca, offering even more travel possibilities.
Challenges and Future Plans
Despite these promising developments, there are hurdles to overcome before cross-border trains can operate seamlessly. These challenges include adapting Renfe’s rolling stock to meet Portuguese infrastructure standards, addressing differences in electrical voltages, and harmonizing signaling systems. It’s estimated that these issues won’t be fully resolved until at least 2025.
Renfe’s plans for Portugal have not been officially confirmed or approved, as stated by a Renfe spokesperson when contacted by Euronews Travel. However, there is optimism surrounding the Madrid-Extremadura high-speed rail line, currently under construction, which will connect with the Portuguese city of Evora in the future. By 2030, this line is expected to extend to Lisbon via Poceirão.
A Shared Vision for Improved Connectivity
While formal plans are yet to be announced, both Spain and Portugal’s prime ministers have endorsed efforts to enhance train connectivity between their countries, aligning with the EU’s broader initiative to liberalize Europe’s railways. Notably, Renfe ceased operating the Madrid-Lisbon Trenhotel Lusitania in May 2020 due to the pandemic, and this service has yet to resume.
