FAA Launches New Air Traffic Controller Training to Reduce Close Calls

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is taking proactive measures to address the issue of close calls in air traffic control. In response to recent incidents that have raised concerns among regulators and the flying public, the FAA announced the implementation of new monthly training for its air traffic controllers. The training aims to reduce the occurrence of near-collisions and enhance safety measures.

According to an FAA statement released on Wednesday June 21, the training will initially focus on various aspects related to surface events at airports. Topics for safety briefings will be determined based on data analysis and seasonal challenges, ensuring that controllers receive targeted instruction to mitigate potential risks.

The need for improved training was underscored by notable incidents, such as a close call at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York earlier this year. An air traffic controller intervened just in time to prevent a collision between an aircraft on the runway and a taxiing Boeing 777. Another incident involved a FedEx cargo plane altering its course to avoid a potential collision with a Southwest Airlines jet during landing in Austin, Texas.

In addition to the training initiative, the FAA has already implemented changes within air traffic control towers and facilities. Supervisors have been directed to maintain a more hands-on presence during peak periods to ensure effective oversight and coordination.

While air traffic controllers bear the primary responsibility for preventing aircraft incidents, it is crucial for flight crews to remain vigilant and adhere to instructions. Radar and other technologies are also utilized to track aircraft movements on the ground, complementing air-based monitoring systems.

Tim Arel, the FAA official overseeing air traffic control, emphasized the collective effort required to achieve the goal of zero close calls. He stated that the new training program will provide an opportunity for the entire workforce to focus on safety and further enhance their skills.
