CEOs have seen their societal role expand in recent years beyond simply reporting to shareholders, says Ursula Burns, former Xerox CEO and the first Black woman to lead a Fortune 500 company. “You have to balance not only how much profit you make, how much cash you can generate, but how much of an impact positive you have on society and on your employees, the communities that you do business in, you have to take all of this into account,” she says.
