GE Aerospace's executive indicated interest in providing a second option for the stretched Airbus A220-500

At the prestigious Paris Air Show, GE Aerospace’s CEO Larry Culp revealed the company’s strong interest in offering a new engine option for the stretched Airbus A220, known as the A220-500. Currently, the only engine available for the A220-100 and A220-300 is the PW1500G, which has been causing concerns among operators due to unexpected long turnaround times during engine shop visits in recent months.

GE Aerospace is actively considering the possibility of providing engines for the A220-500 through its CFM International joint venture with Safran Aircraft Engines in France. Culp emphasized that no option is being ruled out at this stage, keeping the door open for potential collaborations.

The Airbus A220 family has been gaining popularity in the aviation industry, and with the introduction of the stretched A220-500 variant, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury expressed interest in dual-sourcing engines in the future. This strategic move aims to offer airlines more choices and reduce supply chain-related risks. While Airbus confirmed plans to launch the A220-500, their current focus remains on ramping up production and ensuring a smooth supply chain for the A220 program.

GE Aerospace’s potential entry into providing engines for the A220-500 presents an exciting prospect for airlines looking for enhanced options and performance. As the aviation industry evolves, this move could bring greater flexibility and efficiency to the A220 series, further cementing its position as a preferred choice for airlines worldwide.
