Hellenic Seaplanes Adjusts Launch Timeline to Elevate Europe’s Largest Seaplane Network Ambition

Greek start-up Hellenic Seaplanes, based in Athens, has recalibrated its flight operations launch schedule, postponing it to the second quarter of 2024. Despite taking delivery of its inaugural Cessna C208 amphibian from Textron Aviation in August, the company aims to commence operations during the tourist season of 2024, a shift from the initially planned third quarter of 2023.

Hellenic Seaplanes envisions expanding its fleet with a second and third seaplane of the same Cessna C208 type. The ultimate goal is to establish the most extensive seaplane network in Europe and become the pioneering company in Greece to offer hydroplane connections between islands and the mainland.

President and CEO Nikolas Charalambous emphasized the fleet’s versatility, catering not only to traditional island-hopping but also meeting the needs of cruise travelers and fulfilling offshore excursion requirements. The company has already informed the Corfu Port Authority about its intention to operate in the Ionian Sea through the Corfu waterway, primarily focusing on cruise passenger operations.

Operational planning extends to waterways across Greece, utilizing licensed infrastructure in key locations such as Kalamata, Kyllini, Patras, Skyros, Skopelos, Volos, and Alonissos. Hellenic Seaplanes is actively working to secure the necessary permits and ensure operational readiness for the waterways, emphasizing collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority.

Charalambous outlined the company’s strategy, stating, “There is a race to ensure that the operational conditions that will allow the first launches are ready.” This involves securing permits, achieving operational readiness for waterways, and working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority to facilitate aircraft registration. The company aims to receive all necessary approvals to be operational in the first months of 2024.

The adjusted timeline reflects Hellenic Seaplanes’ commitment to meticulous planning and regulatory compliance as it works toward realizing its vision of transforming Greece’s travel landscape with a robust and innovative seaplane network. Stay tuned for updates on this promising venture as it unfolds in the coming months.
