Holiday Travel Trends: More Road Trips and Hotel Stays
This holiday season, a significant number of travelers are opting for road trips rather than flights, with new data from Motel 6 and Studio 6 indicating that over half of those celebrating winter holidays will take to the road. Specifically, 51 percent of respondents plan to travel by their own vehicles, while only 13 percent intend to fly to their destinations.
The study, which surveyed 2,000 Americans planning to celebrate winter holidays this year, revealed various reasons for this trend, including proximity to loved ones and the desire to save money. Julie Arrowsmith, President and CEO of G6 Hospitality, the parent company of Motel 6 and Studio 6, stated, “There’s just something comforting and nostalgic about packing into the family car with a trunk filled with gifts and casseroles and road-tripping to your holiday celebrations.” She added that the uptick in road travel is expected given the current economic environment.
The data reflects a strong sense of familiarity and tradition during the holidays, with 50 percent of respondents citing visiting family and friends as one of their favorite holiday traditions. Additionally, 54 percent plan to use their paid time off to spend quality moments with loved ones.
Motel 6 also found that holiday travelers typically expect to plan their trips three weeks in advance, although 23 percent do not plan to book their accommodations ahead of time.
Arrowsmith noted, “It’s no secret that the holiday season brings joy and togetherness, but when paired with travel woes and high costs, the reason for the season can get lost.”
In light of these trends, it’s clear that this holiday season will see a resurgence in road trips and hotel stays, reflecting travelers’ preferences for comfort and convenience. Additionally, it is worth noting that Motel 6 recently underwent a change in ownership last month, further shaping its offerings during this busy travel season.
