Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is set to enhance its operational capacity with the launch of its new three-runway system on November 28, which is expected to increase the airport’s capacity by approximately 30%.

Vivian Cheung, Acting CEO of Airport Authority Hong Kong, announced the development during the inaugural Super Terminal Expo conference in Hong Kong. She stated that this expansion will attract new airlines, facilitate more point-to-point routes, and enhance hub-to-hub connectivity. “With the three-runway system, we are creating significant opportunities for airlines to expand their networks,” Cheung said, emphasizing the importance of connecting with major global hubs and introducing new destinations for both Hong Kong residents and the 87 million inhabitants of the Greater Bay Area.

The new third runway, commissioned in November 2022, involved the reclamation of approximately 650 hectares (2.5 square miles) of land north of the existing airport island. It features a 3,800-meter (12,467 feet) runway and a supporting taxiway, alongside the expansion of Terminal 2.

Cheung noted that the three-runway system will alleviate previous slot constraints, allowing new airlines to enter the market and enabling existing carriers to increase capacity on popular routes, such as those to Paris, where demand is reportedly outpacing supply. The priority also includes securing more services to previously underrepresented markets in South America and Africa. “As the Greater Bay Area continues to grow, we see many opportunities,” Cheung added.

Hong Kong’s Acting Financial Secretary, Michael Wong Wai-lun, highlighted the strategic significance of this expansion, stating that the three-runway system will further solidify Hong Kong’s status as a leading aviation hub. He encouraged aviation stakeholders to capitalize on the increased capacity.

According to data from OAG Schedules Analyser, HKG will offer 2.88 million departure seats in November 2024, reflecting a 15% decrease compared to pre-pandemic levels. The introduction of the new three-runway system is expected to position Hong Kong International Airport for future growth and greater connectivity in the global aviation market.
