How Safe are Cruise Stops? Understanding Travel Advisories and Onboard Safety

Following alleged incidents of sexual assault on Carnival Cruise Line passengers in the Bahamas amid travel warnings, travelers may question the safety of visiting ports with active advisories.

Two women from Kentucky reported being drugged and raped while ashore on the island of Grand Bahama, leading to the arrest of two men on sexual assault charges.

While the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a security alert and the State Department has maintained a Level 2 advisory for the nation since 2018, cautionary advisories don’t necessarily indicate imminent danger.

“It all comes down to personal risk assessment,” explains Jared Feldman, owner of travel agency Jafeldma Travel. “It’s not intended for you to abandon your travel altogether. It’s just what it is: an advisory. Be aware.”

Are Cruise Stops to Places with Travel Advisories Safe? Cruise operators prioritize security, continuously monitoring potential safety issues well before departure. “Security is top of mind for cruise lines,” says Feldman, highlighting the industry’s vigilance against various threats.

However, some travelers may not receive warnings from cruise lines directly. Attorney Nicholas Gerson, representing Carnival guests involved in the Bahamas incident, noted that his clients were unaware of the advisory at the time.

John H. (Jack) Hickey, a maritime trial attorney, emphasizes that cruise lines are legally obligated to warn guests of known risks, including hazards during port stops.

Travel advisories, though, are subject to change due to geopolitical shifts and other factors, says Carrie Pasquarello, CEO of Global Secure Resources Inc. These advisories may be nuanced and may not reflect the complete safety picture.

Tips for Safe Port Visits During Cruises Pasquarello recommends thorough destination research before booking, considering advisories from various countries for a comprehensive understanding.

Additionally, enrolling in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program and ensuring adequate travel insurance coverage are prudent steps.

During shore excursions, traveling in groups, exploring during daylight hours, and staying vigilant of surroundings can enhance safety. Cruise passengers also have the option to remain onboard during port stops.

Ultimately, travelers are urged to be proactive about their safety and well-being, both abroad and at home. As Pasquarello emphasizes, “We have to be our best safety advocate.”
