Hurtigruten Unveils Progress on Zero-Emission Cruise Ship
Hurtigruten has shared new updates on its ambitious Sea Zero project, which aims to introduce the world’s first zero-emission cruise ship by 2030. First announced in October 2022, the project is designed to revolutionize the cruise industry with sustainable innovations. The ship will use a combination of large batteries, solar sails, and advanced technology to operate entirely emission-free, consuming 40-50% less energy than current vessels.
The Sea Zero ship design recently won the “Concept Vessel Design of the Year” award at the Electric & Hybrid Marine Awards in Amsterdam, highlighting its innovative approach. Hurtigruten’s key partner, Vard, has now released a second set of renderings, showcasing the ship’s cutting-edge features.
One of the standout elements of the ship’s design is its use of OceanWings, specialized sails that harness both solar and wind energy. Developed by a French company, these sails are already operational on the cargo ship Canopée. The sails are expected to reduce energy consumption by 10%, while solar panels will contribute an additional 2-3% in energy savings.
The ship will also feature contra-rotating propellers as the primary propulsion system, powered by large batteries, alongside two retractable thrusters. One of the innovative energy-saving technologies is the air lubrication system, where air bubbles are pumped beneath the hull to reduce drag, saving an estimated 5-10% of energy.
Guests aboard the Sea Zero ship will experience smart cabins designed to minimize energy consumption. Through a dedicated app and an in-cabin screen, passengers will be able to control heating, ventilation, and track their energy usage.
“The cruising industry is a significant polluter, and it is crucial that we now take major steps to reduce emissions. Our goal is to have an emission-free ship by 2030,” said Hurtigruten CEO Hedda Felin.
With groundbreaking technology and a focus on sustainability, the Sea Zero project aims to set new standards in the cruise industry.
