ITA Airways, Volotea Sign Codeshare to Boost Rome Hub

ITA Airways and Volotea have signed a codeshare agreement aimed at strengthening connectivity through Rome Fiumicino Airport, the primary hub of ITA Airways.
The agreement, finalized on April 15, 2026, builds on an existing interline partnership between the two carriers established in 2025. It marks a deeper level of cooperation, enabling passengers to book combined itineraries across both airlines’ networks with greater convenience and seamless connections.
Under the new arrangement, Volotea will expand its role as a feeder carrier into Rome Fiumicino, linking the Italian capital with several regional destinations in France and Spain. The airline currently operates services from the hub to six international destinations, strengthening secondary city connectivity that complements ITA Airways’ broader European and long-haul network.
For ITA Airways, the partnership enhances its ability to capture additional traffic flows from underserved regional markets, funneling passengers into its Rome hub for onward travel. For Volotea, the deal provides access to ITA’s extensive network, allowing it to offer customers more travel options beyond its core point-to-point model.
The codeshare follows earlier attempts at closer collaboration between the two airlines. Both carriers had previously explored a joint strategy in their bid for public service obligation (PSO) routes in Sardinia, proposing a coordinated network that would have linked Cagliari with Rome Fiumicino and Olbia with Milan Linate. However, those routes were ultimately awarded to AeroItalia.
Despite that setback, the new codeshare demonstrates continued alignment between the two airlines’ strategic objectives. By leveraging complementary strengths—ITA’s hub-and-spoke model and Volotea’s regional network—the partnership is designed to improve connectivity and optimize network efficiency.
The agreement also reflects a broader trend in the European aviation market, where airlines are increasingly forming partnerships to expand reach without committing to full mergers or joint ventures. As competition intensifies and cost pressures persist, such collaborations offer a flexible way to enhance network coverage and improve load factors.
For passengers, the codeshare is expected to deliver smoother travel experiences, including coordinated schedules, single-ticket bookings, and improved transfer options through Rome Fiumicino, reinforcing its role as a key gateway in southern Europe.
