Man Charged After TSA Assault at LAX Over Lost Passport

A 35-year-old Australian man has been charged with assaulting a Transportation Security Administration officer at Los Angeles International Airport following a dispute over a misplaced passport, authorities said.
According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court, Thomas Jesse Bingham allegedly confronted a TSA officer on March 15 after claiming his passport had gone missing. The incident occurred in a secured area between Terminals 6 and 7 at LAX.
Prosecutors allege that Bingham approached the officer, identified in court documents as M.R., and demanded assistance locating his passport. When the officer said he could not help and walked away, Bingham allegedly followed him, became aggressive, and initiated physical contact. The complaint states that Bingham grabbed the officer’s arm, pushed him against a vehicle, and attempted to strike him.
The situation escalated further when Bingham allegedly seized the officer by the head and hair, forcing him against a glass wall. The officer eventually subdued Bingham and held him on the ground until additional assistance arrived. The TSA officer later reported injuries to his hand and back and sought medical attention.
Investigators later determined that Bingham’s passport had not been lost in the security area. Instead, it was recovered at a restaurant in Terminal 7 that he had visited earlier, according to authorities.
Bingham has been charged with forcibly assaulting, resisting, or interfering with federal officers performing official duties. He pleaded not guilty during an arraignment on April 16, and a jury trial is scheduled for May 12 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
Officials said the case underscores the importance of maintaining safety and order in secure airport areas, particularly during busy travel periods. The Transportation Security Administration has not commented further on the incident but continues to cooperate with law enforcement as the case proceeds.
The incident highlights the potential consequences of disruptions in high-security environments, where tensions can escalate quickly. Authorities continue to emphasize that any interference with federal officers performing their duties is treated as a serious offense under U.S. law.
