Italy wants to ban dynamic ticket pricing on domestic flights under certain conditions

In a pivotal move, the Italian government is poised to deliberate on a potential legislation aimed at placing constraints on domestic flights operating to the nation’s picturesque islands.

The forthcoming 47th Council of Ministers assembly is slated to address a pivotal decree known as the ‘Urgent Provisions for User Protection and Economic Activities, along with Strategic Investments’. Within this ambit, the Italian government will meticulously assess the implications of the statute.

Pending the approval of the Italian Ministers, this statute is set to proscribe the implementation of dynamic pricing mechanisms by airlines, subject to specific criteria:

  1. The flight must constitute a domestic route connecting mainland Italy with its assortment of captivating islands.
  2. Ticket sales must coincide with peak-demand intervals, concomitant with a state of national emergency.
  3. The resultant escalation in ticket prices or supplementary services must not surpass a staggering 200% increase in comparison to the prevailing average on the designated route.

In an additional noteworthy endeavor, the Italian administration is contemplating the prohibition of “the utilization of automated algorithms for ascertaining tariffs predicated on the user’s online profiling activities or the genre of electronic gadgets exploited for reservations.” Such practices are categorized as “inequitable commercial conduct,” especially in situations where travelers grapple with unfavorable economic repercussions.

Currently, Italy adeptly operates routine domestic flights to five of its enchanting islands, namely Elba, Lampedusa, Pantelleria, Sardinia, and Sicily. This legislative prospectus stands as a testament to Italy’s dedication to preserving equitable air travel conditions for its populace.
