Lindblad Expeditions to Introduce Antarctic Flights in 2024, Providing a Drake Passage Alternative

Antarctica, a dream destination for many, is known for its remote, rugged, and breathtaking landscapes. Lindblad Expeditions, a pioneer in expedition travel, is set to redefine the journey to this White Continent by introducing flights from Argentina to Antarctica starting in November 2024.

Traditionally, reaching Antarctica via cruise ship involves navigating the challenging Drake Passage, where travelers may encounter the notorious “Drake Shake” with waves soaring up to 20 feet. Alternatively, fortunate cruisers experience the calmer “Drake Lake.” Lindblad’s decision to offer flights aims to provide adventurous travelers with an alternative to the unpredictable conditions of the Drake Passage.

Sven-Olof Lindblad, CEO and founder of Lindblad Expeditions, shared insights during the ILTM Cannes luxury travel conference, stating, “We had chosen not to do this for years and years and years because I was concerned about the reliability—not the safety—but the reliability of people actually taking off and landing as they were meant to.”

By introducing flights, Lindblad Expeditions not only enables travelers to bypass the Drake Passage but also eliminates the approximately two days of sailing typically required to reach Antarctica. This strategic move allows the expedition travel company to offer shorter Antarctic itineraries, some as brief as eight days, providing a more accessible and time-efficient option for those with limited schedules.

The decision to wait until aviation technology advanced sufficiently showcases Lindblad Expeditions’ commitment to ensuring a safe and reliable travel experience for its passengers. As the company pioneers this new approach to exploring Antarctica, it opens up opportunities for a wider range of adventurers to witness the wonders of the White Continent in a more convenient and expedited manner.
