Loaded Guns Intercepted at Reagan National Airport During Record-Breaking Travel Days
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport made significant interceptions during two of the busiest travel days on record, seizing two firearms from unsuspecting passengers.
On Thursday, May 23, TSA agents discovered a .40 caliber handgun with 14 bullets, including one in the chamber. The firearm, owned by an Alexandria, Va. resident, was found in the traveler’s carry-on luggage. The individual claimed to have forgotten about the loaded gun in their possession.
The following day, on Friday, May 24, TSA agents intercepted a .380 caliber handgun loaded with seven bullets, also found in a passenger’s carry-on items. The owner, a Florida resident, was unaware of the firearm’s presence.
Both incidents prompted the Metropolitan Airports Authority Police to intervene and confiscate the weapons. Subsequently, both the Virginia and Florida individuals faced citations on weapons charges.
John Busch, TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport, emphasized the diligence of TSA officers amidst the hectic Memorial Day holiday travel period. Despite the soaring checkpoint volume, TSA agents remained vigilant in ensuring the safety and security of all passengers passing through Reagan National Airport.
The interceptions serve as a reminder of the importance of adhering to TSA guidelines and regulations when traveling, particularly regarding the transportation of firearms. As air travel continues to rebound and passenger volumes increase, TSA remains committed to upholding stringent security measures to protect travelers and maintain the integrity of the aviation system.
