Lufthansa CEO Expresses Frustration Over Costly Boeing Delivery Delays

Share

Lufthansa is grappling with substantial delays in the delivery of Boeing’s 777-9 aircraft, which have pushed the expected arrival of the first of these aircraft back to 2026—a year later than the already revised delivery date. The delays, attributed to several development and certification issues that have slowed production, have frustrated Lufthansa and other airlines awaiting the new jets.

In response to these persistent delays and to mitigate the impact on its fleet expansion and renewal plans, Lufthansa has opted to purchase additional aircraft. The airline’s Supervisory Board approved the acquisition of more long-haul widebody aircraft, including several Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and Boeing 777 freighters. This strategic move is part of Lufthansa’s broader effort to modernize its fleet with more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft, despite the setbacks with the 777-9 deliveries.

This situation highlights the ongoing challenges in the aviation industry, where airlines must adapt their fleet strategies due to manufacturing delays. It also reflects the broader impacts of such delays on airline operations and financial planning.
