Awesome Cargo, based in México City Felipe Angeles, is setting its sights on expanding its operations to the United States, with plans to lease two Boeing 737-800 converted freighters from BBAM. This move is part of the cargo carrier’s broader strategy to enhance its service offerings and meet the growing demand for cargo flights between Mexico and the US. The Mexican cargo airline, legally known as TM Aerolineas S.A. de C.V., outlined its intentions in a recent application to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for a foreign air carrier permit.

While the application did not specify target cities in the US, Awesome Cargo emphasized its goal to support local demand and strengthen connectivity with key partners across the border. This strategic initiative follows a partnership formed last year with WestJet Cargo, which saw the Canadian airline operating 737-800(BCF) flights on behalf of Awesome Cargo. Notable routes include services from Felipe Ángeles to Chicago O’Hare and from Guadalajara to Los Angeles International, showcasing the carrier’s commitment to expanding its footprint in North America.

Currently, Awesome Cargo’s fleet features two leased A330-200 Class E-converted freighters, lacking full-sized cargo doors, owned by Air Lease Corporation and ALC Blarney Aircraft, respectively. The planned addition of two 737-800(BCF)s aims to complement operations alongside WestJet Cargo and marks a significant step in diversifying the carrier’s fleet. Additionally, Awesome Cargo is considering acquiring two more A330s to maintain widebody capacity, are scheduled for Passenger to Freighter (P2F) conversion.

In line with its growth strategy, Awesome Cargo is also looking to expand its charter and scheduled flight operations to Central and South America from the first quarter of 2024. This expansion is designed to bolster connectivity and support the global supply chain, reflecting the carrier’s ambition to become a key player in international cargo transportation.

Ownership of Awesome Cargo is primarily held by Luis Ricardo Ramos Landero, with a significant majority of voting shares, underscoring the leadership’s deep-rooted experience in the Mexican cargo sector, including previous involvement with AeroUnion. The company’s vision extends beyond flight operations, with plans to establish an MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) base at Felipe Ángeles, further solidifying its infrastructure and operational capabilities.

As Awesome Cargo moves forward with its plans to lease 737-800 freighters and enter the US market, the carrier is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing cargo services between Mexico and the United States, driving growth, and meeting the evolving needs of the cargo industry.
