Mexico’s newest aviation hub, Tulum International Airport, officially opened on December 1, 2023, marking a significant milestone for the Yucatan Peninsula’s travel and tourism sector. Initially, the airport is handling domestic flights, with services provided by Mexican airlines including Viva Aerobus and Aeroméxico from key cities like Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Tijuana.

The much-anticipated launch of international flights is set for March 28, 2024, and several major U.S. airlines have already lined up to commence services. American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines have all announced their plans to operate flights to Tulum, which is located about 90 miles south of Cancun. American Airlines will begin daily flights from Charlotte, Miami, and Dallas-Fort Worth, while Delta Air Lines will start its service from Atlanta. United Airlines is scheduled to offer non-stop flights from Newark/New York, Houston, Chicago, and, starting May 23, 2024, from Los Angeles.

Tulum International Airport, also known as Felipe Carrillo Puerto Airport, is set to alleviate the congestion at the heavily trafficked Cancun International Airport. It is strategically located to serve not only Tulum but also nearby destinations like Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya. This new airport is expected to generate significant economic benefits for the region and provide more route options and better prices for passengers.
