Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will formally acquire Bombardier’s regional jet programme on June 1, nearly 12 months after the deal was first announced. Mitsubishi first announced that it would acquire the Canadian Regional Jet (CRJ) on June 25, 2019. The acquisition marks a critical event for Mitsubishi Heavy’s own regional jet programme, Spacejet, which is due to begin flying regular service in 2021 and in the US in 2023.

The CRJ programme will operate under the name MHI RJ Aviation Group, will provide maintenance, repair and marketing capabilities for Mitsubishi Heavy in North America and Europe.

The CRJ will provide maintenance and repair services, as Mitsubishi Heavy aims to sell SpaceJet as a replacement for the CRJ’s aging passenger jet fleet.

This sale marks the end of commercial jet business at Bombardier, which has already sold its larger C-series passenger jet programme to Airbus in 2018.
