Münster Airport Becomes Germany’s Fastest-Growing Hub

Münster/Osnabrück Airport recorded nearly 1.3 million passengers in 2024, achieving a 30% year-over-year increase that made it Germany’s fastest-growing airport last year. Located in northwestern Germany, the airport serves a core catchment area of 3.4 million residents, with access to 11.1 million people within a 90-minute drive, including nearby regions in the eastern Netherlands. This combination of strong local demand and cross-border accessibility has helped fuel its rapid growth.

The airport has successfully attracted a diverse mix of 13 airline partners, operating flights to 12 destinations across eight countries. The steady expansion of routes and carriers has been central to Münster/Osnabrück’s recent passenger growth, supported by strong partnerships and strategic route development efforts. More growth is already planned for 2025, with multiple new airlines and destinations scheduled to launch service at the airport. Ryanair, one of the key drivers of low-cost expansion across Europe, will introduce four weekly flights to London Stansted and two weekly flights to Málaga during the 2025 summer season. Meanwhile, Corendon Airlines is set to begin weekly service to Izmir starting in July.

Additional international growth will come from new airline partners entering the market. Nesma Airlines, Red Sea Airlines, and Aegean Airlines will all launch summer service to holiday destinations including Hurghada and Heraklion. This diversification into popular leisure markets continues to strengthen the airport’s role as an important regional gateway for both German and international travelers.

As a member of Routes 360, the industry’s leading digital platform dedicated to global route development, Münster/Osnabrück Airport is actively promoting new destination opportunities to airline partners worldwide. The airport’s Routes 360 profile highlights extensive unserved and underserved route possibilities supported by traffic data and demand forecasts. Among the unserved markets identified are several popular leisure destinations such as Rhodes, Kos, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife South, Faro, and Lanzarote. Major European hubs like Vienna, Zurich, Frankfurt, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Barcelona, Athens, Lisbon, Porto, Rome, and Istanbul (both IST and SAW airports) are also listed as top unserved priorities.

Beyond these, the airport sees potential in expanding service to other key cities including Split, Ibiza, Varna, Burgas, Dalaman, Bodrum, Budapest, Krakow, Beirut, and Kayseri. Hurghada, which is currently underserved, has been identified as a market with additional capacity potential as well.

Münster/Osnabrück Airport’s continued growth reflects its strong positioning in one of Europe’s most competitive aviation markets. Its ability to balance scheduled airline partnerships with charter and leisure carriers has allowed it to expand rapidly while offering passengers a growing selection of destinations. As airlines continue seeking regional airports with solid demand and minimal congestion, Münster/Osnabrück is emerging as an attractive alternative hub for both carriers and travelers. With new airlines and routes set to launch in 2025, the airport is on track to build on its record-breaking performance and further strengthen its role in Germany’s air transport network.
