Norway Awards Subsidized Regional Air Route Contracts to Widerøe and DAT
Norway’s Transport Ministry has taken significant steps to enhance regional air connectivity by awarding subsidized regional air route contracts (FOT) to two prominent airlines, Widerøe and DAT.
These strategic contracts, effective from April 1, 2024, until October 31, 2027, or 2028, aim to achieve several pivotal objectives, including reducing maximum passenger fares by 50% and augmenting seat capacity on these vital air services. Key Route Assignments:
- Widerøe: The major Norwegian regional carrier, Widerøe, is set to operate various routes, encompassing Lakselv-Tromsø, Andøya-Bodø, Andøya-Tromsø, Harstad/Narvik-Bodø, and Harstad/Narvik-Tromsø.
- DAT: Danish operator DAT will take responsibility for the Røros-Oslo, Florø-Oslo, and Stord-Oslo routes, contributing to Norway’s regional air connectivity.
Transport Minister Jon-Ivar Nygård emphasized the profound impact of these FOT routes on Norwegian communities. He stated that they enable people to reside, work, and thrive across Norway, fostering stronger ties within the country and reducing the cost of living, particularly in Norway’s elongated geography. By strengthening local communities, these contracts align with the government’s commitment to regional development.
Environmental Considerations:
In alignment with contemporary environmental concerns, the contracts incorporate measures to address carbon dioxide emissions. Operators will be required to provide information regarding expected emissions and offer passengers the option to purchase climate compensation for their journeys. The Transport Ministry is also actively encouraging the adoption of zero- and low-emission aircraft as soon as feasible from a technical perspective.
These initiatives underscore Norway’s dedication to fostering regional air connectivity, supporting local communities, and advancing sustainable aviation practices.
