Outrage as Toddler Locked in Lavatory on Juneyao Airlines Flight

A disturbing incident on a Juneyao Airlines flight has sparked widespread outrage after two women locked a crying toddler in an airplane lavatory during a domestic flight in China. The event, which occurred on August 24, 2024, on flight H01259 from Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport (KWE) to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), has ignited intense debate on social media.

The toddler, who was traveling with her grandmother, began crying mid-flight, prompting two women—neither of whom are believed to be related to the child—to intervene. One of the women recorded the incident and posted it on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, where it quickly gained attention.

The video shows the two women approaching the crying girl and forcibly placing her in the aircraft’s lavatory, locking the door behind her. The child, reportedly just over one year old, is seen crying and struggling to escape the confined space. The women can be heard telling the toddler that she can only leave the lavatory if she stops crying.

The grandmother of the child was reportedly prevented from accessing the lavatory while her granddaughter was locked inside. However, Juneyao Airlines later stated that the grandmother had given the women permission to “educate” the child, a claim that has been met with skepticism and criticism.

“Be quiet for 3 minutes or we will not let you go out to find grandma,” one of the women is heard saying in the video. The other woman adds, “If you don’t cry, we will take you to grandma.” The video, which was later deleted, showed the toddler eventually being released and remaining silent for the rest of the flight.

The incident has sparked significant controversy online, with many social media users condemning the actions of the two women as “child abuse” and “no different from kidnapping.” The video’s circulation led to a wave of backlash, with critics calling for action against the women involved.

In response to the criticism, one of the women posted a follow-up on Douyin, defending her actions by stating that she “prefers to take action rather than be a bystander.” Despite her defense, the overwhelming response online has been negative, with many questioning the ethics and legality of the women’s actions.

Juneyao Airlines responded to the incident on August 26, 2024, informing local media that they are investigating the complaints received about the event. The airline has not yet clarified what actions, if any, will be taken against the women involved. Authorities have also not indicated whether any charges will be filed in relation to the incident.

The event has raised broader concerns about passenger behavior and the responsibilities of airlines in ensuring the safety and well-being of all passengers, particularly vulnerable children. As the investigation continues, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and proper conduct in confined public spaces like airplanes.
