Euromonitor International, a global market research company, has unveiled its annual rankings of city destinations for 2023, considering factors such as tourism, sustainability, and economic performance.

In the Top 100 City Destinations Index 2023, European cities dominate the list, with Paris claiming the title of the world’s most attractive city destination. Europe boasts seven destinations in the top 10 and holds a strong presence with 63 cities in the overall top 100.

Nadejda Popova, Senior Manager (Loyalty) at Euromonitor International, highlighted Paris’s exceptional performance across pillars such as Tourism Policy and Attractiveness, Tourism Infrastructure, and Tourism Performance as the reason for its top ranking.

The top 10 city destinations for 2023 are as follows:

  1. Paris, France
  2. Dubai, United Arab Emirates
  3. Madrid, Spain
  4. Tokyo, Japan
  5. Amsterdam, The Netherlands
  6. Berlin, Germany
  7. Rome, Italy
  8. New York, United States of America
  9. Barcelona, Spain
  10. London, United Kingdom

Notably, Tokyo entered the top 10 for the first time, driven by improvements in tourism infrastructure, the easing of travel restrictions, and the relatively weak value of the Yen.

Asia also made a significant presence in the rankings, with cities like Singapore (11), Seoul (14), Osaka (16), and Hong Kong (17) making it to the top 20.

The report identified four new cities that joined the Top 100 City Destinations for 2023: Washington DC (48), Montreal (68), Santiago (88), and Vilnius (92).

This report comes amid the ongoing recovery in international travel in 2023. Euromonitor International expects a 38% increase in the total number of international trips, reaching 1.3 billion by the end of the year, driven in part by the return of Chinese travelers.

Euromonitor International, in collaboration with data company Lighthouse, used a comprehensive approach, considering over 50 metrics across six pillars to determine the overall attractiveness score of cities. These pillars include economic and tourism performance, tourism infrastructure, tourism policy and attractiveness, business performance, health and safety, and sustainability.
