Philippine Airlines Plans Major Fleet Expansion to Meet Rising Demand
Philippine Airlines (PR, Manila Ninoy Aquino International) is poised for significant expansion, as the airline’s CEO, Stanley Ng, revealed plans to place an extensive aircraft order to cater to anticipated increases in passenger demand. In a discussion with ABS CBN News, Ng indicated that the airline is conducting studies to support a prospective order of approximately 75 aircraft, aiming to boost its total order backlog to around 100 planes.
Currently, the airline has orders for thirteen A321-200N and nine A350-1000 aircraft. According to confirmations from Airbus, the delivery of the A321N models is expected to commence in mid-2026, with the first A350s scheduled to start arriving in the latter half of 2025.
Further financial strategies are also in play as Philippine Airlines engages with various financial institutions to secure about USD 500 million in funds. This funding is intended to exercise options for acquiring an additional three A350-1000s, which Ng refers to as a “buffer” that would bring the total current orders to 25 aircraft. “We are talking to the banks right now for the funding,” Ng commented, emphasizing the strategic financial planning involved in this expansive fleet enhancement.
This proactive approach in fleet management is part of Philippine Airlines’ broader strategy to accommodate future growth and market demands. “It’s thinking ahead also,” Ng added, highlighting the importance of strategic foresight in the aviation industry.
With an existing operational fleet that includes a diverse array of aircraft models serving 72 airports across 21 countries, Philippine Airlines is gearing up to not only expand its fleet but also potentially increase its market footprint significantly. This move is indicative of the airline’s robust approach to seizing market opportunities and enhancing its competitive edge in the global aviation arena.
